Dieses Format ist das Standardformat des Windows-Betriebssystems, wird mittlerweile aber auch von vielen Programmen anderer Betriebssysteme unterstützt. Es basiert auf dem RGB-Modell, die Kodierung von z.B. Graustufenbildern ist aber mit Hilfe von Farbtabellen ebenfalls möglich.
